Teperberg

Teperberg 1870 is a winery near Kibbutz Tzora, at the foot of the Judean Hills in Israel. It was established in 1870 and is Israel's oldest winery as well as the fourth largest in the country. Originally called Efrat, the winery was founded in 1870 by Avraham Teperberg and his son Zeev Zaid Teperberg. The name stems from the biblical "Efrata shehi Beit Lechem", the road on which the grapes were brought to the winery. It was first established in the old city of Jerusalem. When Zeev Teperberg died in 1905, his son Mordechai Shimon took over the management. The British mandate government decided that all "industries" had to leave the old city of Jerusalem, so the winery moved to different locations outside the city walls. In 1950, the sons Menachem and Yitzhak von Mordechai founded another winery in Nahalat Yitzhak. When Yitzhak died in 1960, Menachem continued to run the family winery independently. In 1964, Menachem bought land in Motza, just outside Jerusalem, to start its growing business. A modern winery was founded there in 1967. In 2006 the winery decided to produce more sophisticated and high class wines. The winery moved to Kibbutz Tzora and officially changed its name to Teperberg 1870. Teperberg is managed by Moti Teperberg and is now one of the leading wineries in Israel.
